The Different Types of File Cabinets

Lateral file cabinets are shorter and much wider than their vertical counterparts. Files can be stored either front to back or side to side, and the cabinet itself has only two or three drawers. Each lateral file drawer can also hold more files than a standard vertical unit.

An additional benefit is that lateral file cabinet drawers do not have to be opened as far to access files, and this becomes especially helpful in tight offices spaces where people are constantly moving around. Some lateral file cabinets are designed with cubbyhole drawers that allow for additional types of storage, and because these are shorter cabinets, it’s convenient to put a printer, fax machine or other piece of office equipment on top.
