The Different Types of File Cabinets

The Different Types of File Cabinets

Did you know that there is more than one type of file cabinet?

If not, you are not alone. Most people don’t realize the different options they have when it comes to finding the perfect file cabinets for their business or home office, and they end up liming their storage options. File cabinets come in two distinct models: Vertical file cabinets and lateral file cabinets.

Vertical file cabinets are the more traditional model that you see most often. They generally have two to five drawers and files are stored facing the front. These file cabinets work best in offices where space is limited, because they expand upward instead of outward. They take up minimal wall space, but because they are so deep they can hold a large number of files. Vertical file cabinets are widely recognized for creating great filing systems that can increase an organization’s efficiency and reduce the stress of lost or misplaced paperwork.

Lateral file cabinets are shorter and much wider than their vertical counterparts. Files can be stored either front to back or side to side, and the cabinet itself has only two or three drawers. These cabinets are convenient because they can hold letter-sized and legal folders in the same drawer, where the vertical file cabinets can only hold one or the other. Each lateral file drawer can also hold more files than a standard vertical unit.

An additional benefit is that lateral file cabinet drawers do not have to be opened as far to access files, and this becomes especially helpful in tight offices spaces where people are constantly moving around. Some lateral file cabinets are designed with cubbyhole drawers that allow for additional types of storage, and because these are shorter cabinets, it’s convenient to put a printer, fax machine or other piece of office equipment on top.

No matter which type of file cabinet you choose, rely on Sauder to provide you with the high-quality products you deserve. Check out our great selection of file cabinets and other versatile office furniture today!
